The Wallace Stegner Center’s popular noon-hour green bag series will feature the following presentations during the Fall semester:
- Environmental Justice in Salt Lake City (September 7, 12:15-1:15)
This panel discussion will explore environmental justice issues affecting Latinx communities in Salt Lake City. Ruhan Nagra, the founding Director of the Environmental Law Justice Clinic at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, will moderate the panel discussion, which will include Meisei Gonzalez, HEAL Utah; Olivia Juarez, GreenLatinos; and Daniel Mendoza, Atmospheric Sciences, University of Utah. This panel discussion is cosponsored with Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at Utah Law as part of the law school’s Latinx Heritage Month programming.
- Living River – The Promise of The Mighty Colorado (October 19, 12:15-1:15)
Dave Showalter, award winning photographer and author, will deliver a presentation based on his new book Living River – The Promise of The Mighty Colorado. Starting at the headwaters in the Continental Divide, he will discuss the wide range of issues facing the Colorado River and highlight places that demonstrate the land’s resilience, offering hope for the future. - Laboratories of the Future: Tribes and Rights of Nature (November 15, 12:15-1:15)
Elizabeth Kronk Warner, the Jefferson B. & Rita E. Fordham Presidential Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, will discuss a paper she co-authored with Jensen Lillquist (Class of 2023) (published in the California Law Review that compares the rights of nature in international, federal, state, and tribal contexts and explores what states and the federal government can learn from tribal governments in this space. This presentation is cosponsored with Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at Utah Law as part of the law school’s Native American Heritage Month programming.
The Stegner Center Green Bag Series will be offered in person, with a virtual option for attendees. Details are forthcoming on the spring semester green bag series, which will include presentations on western forests and climate change, extremism on public lands, and other topics.
