Giving to the S.J. Quinney College of Law

When you give to the S.J. Quinney College of Law, you are supporting students who are preparing to enter the legal profession, helping to advance legal research and scholarship related to critical issues, and providing needed programs to the community.  Any amount given can make a difference!   • Many people like to support the causes that mean the most to them with a gift through their will or trust, or other type of planned arrangement. These gifts, known as legacy gifts, are usually, though not always, fulfilled after death. Although most planned gifts come from wills or living trusts, other options include life insurance, retirement assets, real estate, and securities.

Donations to the General Scholarship Fund are combined and leveraged with others like yours for maximum impact on our students. Scholarships are awarded by merit- and need-based criteria and are managed directly at the College of Law.

Dee Benson Memorial Scholarship
The Dee Benson Memorial Scholarship was established as a legacy to the impact Judge Benson had on students and the legal community.

Sentry Financial Corporation Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship will be awarded to students with financial need from underrepresented populations within the community. Preference will be given to female students, particularly students who are the first in their families to attend college.

Utah Law Review Opportunity Fund
This endowment provides an annual scholarship to a student in their second or third year who is a member of the Utah Law Review staff. Additional preference will be given to a student from an underrepresented population.

James R. Holbrook Scholarship Fund
Preference in awarding this scholarship will be given to students who have served or are currently serving in any branch of the United States military; single parents; or first-generation college students. Read more.

Flora Sombrero/Neeta Lind Diné (Navajo) Law Scholarship Fund
This scholarship supports a law student interested in pursuing a career in public interest or public service.

YAA Barbara J. Dickey Scholarship
The YAA Barbara J. Dickey Scholarship is awarded to a 3L student each year in the spring. The scholarship focuses on a student's extracurricular activities, volunteer participation, support of classmates, or other relevant experience.

This scholarship is to support students attending the S.J. Quinney College of Law who are from or have ties to Southern California.

David Arapene Cuch Endowed Scholarship
During his brief life, David Arapene Cuch, 1978-2007, accomplished many things. At the time of his unexpected death, Cuch, who was believed to be the first Ute Indian to attend law school, was in his third year at SJQ. This scholarship was created to provide financial support to native students who follow David Cuch’s path by attending law school at the U.

Robert W. Adler Endowed Scholarship
The Robert W. Adler Endowed Scholarship was established in June 2022 in celebration of his retirement, outstanding legal career, and service to the law school and legal community. Bob dedicated 28 years of teaching and leadership service to the S.J. Quinney College of Law. Preference will be given to students interested in natural resources law.

Alexander Tallchief Skibine Indian Law Endowed Scholarship
Gifts to this fund will honor the legacy of the late Utah Law Professor Alexander Tallchief Skibine through an endowed scholarship to support students at the S.J. Quinney College of Law with an interest in Indian Law. Skibine was the S.J. Quinney Endowed Professor of Law at the time of his passing. He was appointed to the faculty at the University of Utah College of Law in 1989, and it was here that he spent his entire academic career.

Margaret Osswald Endowment
The Osswald Fellowship will support new law graduates who exemplify the traits Meg embodied: commitment to public service; interest in practicing environmental law in Utah; and an ability to build community in whatever position they hold.

Centers of Excellence and Programs

College of Law – Pro-Bono Initiative General Fund
Gifts will support the Pro Bono Initiative, our voluntary program with the goal of promoting public service in the legal profession. The initiative seeks to instill greater awareness among law students of their ethical responsibility to provide legal services to the disadvantaged.

Gifts directly support the multidisciplinary study of natural resources and environmental law and policy; our dynamic environmental programs; and the annual Wallace Stegner Center symposium.

College of Law – Law and Biomedical Sciences Fund
Gifts support addressing new developments in the biomedical sciences through law. Interests include intellectual property; law and genetics; privacy and biomedical informatics; law and neuroscience; and health reform.

S.J. Quinney College of Law Bystander Initiative
Gifts will support the Bystander Initiative, led by Professor Amos Guiora, that focuses on the role of bystanders and enablers in sexual assaults. The Initiative has undertaken numerous projects including a book, law review article, podcasts, and is involved in legislative efforts to criminalize the bystander and enabler in the U.S. and globally.

ULaw Food Pantry
The U Law Food Pantry provides S.J. Quinney College of Law students and their families access to necessary supplies for nutritious meals and other day-to-day basic needs, including: non-perishable food items, pantry basics, fresh produce (as available), soap, detergent, personal hygiene products, and more.

Arc Fellows

As partners of the Arc to Justice program, law firms support the College of Law's efforts to enhance justice for all people, especially from underrepresented populations. The program provides three-year, full tuition scholarships (Arc Fellowships) to two members of our incoming JD class. In addition to helping underwrite the cost of legal education, the program works to integrate diverse students into the legal community—which is particularly important as many diverse students are first generation lawyers who have never been exposed to our profession or its members.
