ULaw Vaults in National Rankings

RES GESTAE | Winter 2022

By Shelby Jarman.

The S.J. Quinney College of Law continues to shine—with standout legal programs, prominent alumni, innovative faculty, and talented students, it’s no wonder that Utah Law is listed among the top law schools in the nation. Here are some of the many ways SJQ is making waves in the legal world.

Scholarly Impact

SJQ faculty continually work to release relevant and timely legal research. The annual Sisk-Leiter ranking of scholarly impact, which focuses on citations and scholarship from tenured faculty at U.S. law schools, ranks the College of Law 36th—and 13th among public law schools—showcasing the breadth and depth of our faculty’s research activity.

Some of our top-cited faculty include Robert Adler, Tony Anghie, Shima Baradran Baughman, Paul Cassell, Jorge Contreras, Leslie Francis, RonNell Andersen Jones, Robert Keiter, Chris Peterson, Matthew Tokson, and Elizabeth Kronk Warner.

Quality Alumni

Our alumni continue to be a force for good in the legal field. In fact, PreLaw Magazine points out that many of our alumni are superheroes, or “super lawyers.”

The Super Lawyers website publishes a very selective ranking, with no more than 5% of lawyers from each state earning the honor of “super lawyer.” The website uses its patented selection process, which includes independent research, peer nominations, and peer evaluations, to find the most highly rated lawyers in each state.

PreLaw Magazine looked at how many “super lawyers” graduated from each school, then compared it to the total number of alumni to determine the percentage of graduates who are considered “super lawyers.” 13.2% of our alumni earn the distinction—a figure that places the college 19th among public law schools, and proves just how impactful the SJQ network is.

Law School Outcomes

The Above the Law website has a unique way of comparing law schools. Unlike other ranking systems that look at LSAT scores and the GPA of the incoming class, this ranking system focuses on outcomes: quality legal jobs, costs and debt, and alumni satisfaction.

With these factors taken into consideration, the S.J. Quinney College of Law ranks #34 among all law schools, speaking to the success our students find once they graduate.

Programs

PreLaw Magazine recently released a new round of program rankings—and because the magazine is an important resource for those considering law school, these rankings carry significant weight. S.J. Quinney College of Law ranked #7 for public interest law and #2 for criminal law, with our health law program receiving an “A” grade. No matter which field of law a potential law student wishes to pursue, they’ll find a quality education at the S.J. Quinney College of Law.
